What’s the difference between the ACT & SAT, and how do I decide which one is better for me?

Both the SAT and ACT have evolved, especially with the SAT transitioning to a digital format. Noteworthy distinctions include the SAT featuring two math sections compared to the ACT's one and introducing a science section. For an in-depth comparison, explore our ACT vs SAT Chart. It's crucial to acknowledge the significant shift in testing methodology with the SAT now delivered in a digital format.

The schools I am applying for are test optional, so why should I care about studying and taking the ACT or SAT?

Test optional doesn’t mean test neutral. Our rule of thumb is that, unless the score is much less robust than the rest of your application packet, it’s best to submit an exam. Schools still take them into consideration, and it might nudge you ahead of an otherwise comparable applicant.

Should I take both the ACT & SAT?

Yes, but you don’t have to. The vast majority of colleges, especially post-pandemic, will accept either the SAT or the ACT, so it’s best to go with whichever test best showcases your talents. That said, if you know you’re applying to schools who will need to see both exams, or you just want to have all your bases covered, it’s not a bad idea. We just recommend against preparing for them simultaneously, as there are subtle differences in the strategic approaches necessary.
